Hello, and welcome to fit2fly.co! My name is Linda, but you can call me “Lady L” or “The L Vitamin.” I am a thirty-something Australian flight attendant and have been living in Dubai for the last 10 years while working for an international airline. The goal of Fit2Fly is to give you a flight attendant’s view (from the top) on how to stay healthy on the go.
While studying holistic health and nutrition at The Institute of Integrative Nutrition New York, I gained all sorts of knowledge in the health and wellness industry. Combine that with my years as a flight attendant and you could say I know a thing or two about being kind to your body while traveling.
I wasn’t always the green smoothie connoisseur I am today, and maintaining a healthy, fit lifestyle has not been an easy goal to reach. Working as a flight attendant has given me the luxury of traveling the world, dining on authentic international delights, sipping champagne and cocktails and dancing my way through London, Sydney, Dubai, Detroit, Miami, Berlin, Ibiza, the Rio carnival, Montreal, and even Black Rock City.
Pair that with crazy airline hours, eating onboard food at all hours of the day, and not making the best choices for my body, I gained what the locals refer to as the “Dubai stone,” 6-7 kilos that creep up when you move to the area. The funny thing is that it is practically an inevitable circumstance – when I was a newbie flight attendant, it was recommended I order my uniform in a size larger than what I measured. Uniform store staff said it was because the fabric shrinks, but it was actually because they knew a few extra kilos were in my future!
I initially lost the weight by going to a fasting and detox retreat in 2007, which involved a week of yoga and colonics. I lost 4kgs and learned all about raw food, food combining, eating for your blood type, the 80/20 rule, and holistic health. This is where my love for nutrition started, and I continued to dabble in yoga after the retreat was over. Unfortunately, I fell back into my old lifestyle and habits, so the weight came back along with another 6kgs to boot. I started to feel like things were spiraling out of control.
I attended a second detox in Thailand, where I consulted with a health coach and healer who previously worked in aviation medicine for another Middle Eastern airline. In a nutshell, he told me to quit flying because that was the root of all my health concerns. After weighing up the pros and cons I decided to keep flying anyway, but knew I had to make some changes. I was going to continue flying in the healthiest, most balanced way possible, and over time I lost 10kgs and have managed to keep it off for several years now. This is not always easy, but I have learned so much from my personal endeavors and love sharing my knowledge with other frequent travelers.
My long-term goal is to open a beachside raw food cafe of my own, but for right now I am contributing what I can by offering health coaching to people who are at the start of their journey. If you are ready begin your transformation to a healthier lifestyle and want a little guidance along the way, you are in the right place! Every client I take on in my health coaching program brings me one step closer to my goal of hanging up my wings and making the world a healthier, fitter place.
